I think age seems to play an important role here. At times he sounds really innocent, and at other times he provides some psychadellic thought pattern ("And I am talking to the sofa in the soda machine"). Maybe he is showing the difference between innocence and growing up because he precedes the soda machine line with "This is real life". Real life being compared with psychoactive thought.
