To me this song is about faith and resilience. Most people know that it's a tearful, hurtful path to find love. We suffer heartbreak after heartbreak and it can make us never want to try again. This song is the author coming to the realization that he shouldn't (and doesn't) have to go through all of what he has been to find his love. He doesn't have to change who he is or sacrifice everything for someone who isn't really interested. If there really is a true love out there for him, she'll find him -- or rather, they'll find each other. It's such an uplifting thought -- you have a love, and even if you haven't met them yet, have faith that you will and carry on.
Also, I don't think the verse about her being on her own means that it's an old girlfriend. What that means is that they're separated and instead of fretting over who she is and where she is, he just needs to focus on himself until they're ready for each other.
This song is quickly turning into my favorite song -- although Audra and Sleeping Through Autumn run a close second.
