This song reminds me of a book I read, called 'Solaris'. It's a story about a guy whose wife commits suicide, and ten years later, he goes to this planet which basically recreates her from his memories and thoughts. She, and the guilt, start making life difficult for the guy, and, besides, they are sort of tied together so he can't go far away from her. He knows he must get rid of her, but can't do it because he still loves her.
I don't think Tom read the book or anything, but maybe he did mean an emotional struggle a bit like the one in it? Maybe it's about loving someone who, for some reason, you are forbidden to, and don't want to, love? A sort of criminal, maybe? He's obviously comforted by her, and, at the same time, feels endangered and repulsed by her presence in his life. Still, he knows he could never let go.
By the way, I LOVE this song! Is it my imagination, or does Tom's voice sound especially sexy in it...?!
