I think this song is about an abusive relationship. The first part is him trying to help his friend. He can see she's unhappy, constantly 'pickin' at herself & 'torturin' herself. And is trying to get her to open up to him "say, say what you're thinkin. Don't carry round that pain."

The 'i love... i love when things work out' bit is meant to be ironic i think. He's tryining to help her but she's either unable or refuses to see the situation for what it is.

The last part "and i see it from another place right now, i'm coming home before i hit the ground" - sounds like he's imitating the point of view of the person in the abusive relationship. They're finally realising their situation and going home/seeking help before something worse happens and they "hit the ground".

Then the very last part "Smash... and i feel it" is them finally allowing themself to feel or comprehend the abuse they've been subjected to without denying it or coveringn it up (as they do at the start... "but now you're smilin, holdin back those tears).

Dunno... that's just my take on it, the music is actually really happy and it wasn't until i properly listened to the lyrics that i realised it might be about something as dark as physical abuse, though from the title it would seem pretty obvious.
