Second, a couple of people have gotten close but no one's gotten it quite right. I believe someone said it was trying to become detached of a realtionship, and someone said it's about fitting in or being wanted.
It's a bit of both. This song, as well as every song on "On Letting Go", is about god. This one is about how much he trusted in it, but once he looked at it, he realized god is just a delusion. How you can only believe in god if you force yourself to. And he can't sell himself out like that.
It starts out like a season in reverse,
