Oh and i think the dad is a direct comparison. As in saying his wifes love might have been conditional but his dads was not this is shown by the fact that his dad does what his brother tried to do for his wife "reached out to her". This backs up the point of not falling into the trap of thinking "because a bad thing has happened all things previously were bad also"
