I think this song represents a mature break up. They went their separate ways but still there are things that bring back the memories of past relationships in everyday life, hence the smell of the wind as a trigger for memories, and since it was a mutual break up and they both cared for eachother he doesnt want her to feel empathetic for him so he is telling her that he is alright to spare her the grief. There is some guilt on both sides of the break up.
