"Am I correct to defend the fist that holds this pen? It's ink that lies, the pen, the page, the paper I live, I learn you will always take what I have earned And so aid my end while I believe I'm winning"

It's him second-guessing himself about the lyrics he has written and the music he has made. People are bringing him down and making him question himself. Maybe bad reviews or something? Taking what he has earned could mean fans or money maybe, and whoever is doing this to him is helping him prepare for the end of his career when he feels like he is just getting started.

"Our friends speak out in our defense Pay ten deaf ears for two months rent We burn the gallows they erect And cut the nooses they tie for our necks"

The people at his record company, perhaps, speak out to the people refered in the first stanza and try to defend the band. They are defending them and everything but they know nothing that they are about. They are paying them to play music that they don't understand but as long as they are profiting from them, they don't care. Now the band is rebelling and "cutting the nooses" from them because they know that if they don't start taking control themselves, things are not going to go the way they would want. Selling out, commercializing, aka: Suicide to them.

"You constantly make it impossible to make conversation We're comatose but audible But I liked it the farther I get out We passed it off, but it's all on us Well common conversation, it took everything I got And I liked it the farther I get out"

It is so hard to get through to these people and they feel like they are comotose (unconscious) and everything is happening and they can't do anything about it, but they are being heard. The more they get out, the more shows they play, the more they are being heard by the right kind of people and the more that they like it.

The rest of the song is mostly how they want to get back at the people that wouldn't listen to them, or wouldn't give them the time of day. People who let other people make their decisions for them (the soldiers).

"Take heart, sweetheart. Or I will take it from you."

Take heart in things, care about things, listen to things and devour things for your own enjoyment, not what everyone else wants you to do, or someone will take that away from you too.

This is such an amazing song. I take it as a "That's not the last you are going to hear from us" kind of song and I think it gets that point across.

That's just my take on it, I could be completely off.
