I don't thing this song is meant to be intensely analyzed as a whole. One theme (that of the chorus) is that of the potentially heartbreaking experiences opposite sex friendships can bring about. Her male friend likes her and she likes him too, but she respects him and feels like she would not be good girlfriend -- she is not capable of loving him the way he deserves to be loved. She might be able to throw herself into someones arms whom she cared little about because if she doesn't care about how he feels.
