This is a sad and darkly beautiful song. I'll just try to explain what it means to me by examining a few lines:
“Please just forget me”
“Never let me into your heart”
“‘Cause the one thing I am afraid of”
“Is falling out of love”
This clearly seems to describe someone who is afraid of hurting the people he loves. He's afraid to enter into a new relationship because self-doubt and past experiences have convinced him that it will probably end badly. At this point, he doesn't want to let the other person down. So it's easier to end the relationship before it even becomes serious. He also says:
“Please, I'll forget you”
“Never let you into my heart”
So he’s not only afraid of being loved, but he’s also afraid of loving someone else. He wants to avoid being hurt or betrayed. The meaning of these parts seems pretty obvious, but then he says:
“I’ve lived for the devil”
“With a head full of devilish things”
“It only was because”
“‘Cause I was so afraid”
“Of falling out of love”
It may not be as immediately obvious, but to me it says that the hopelessness and depression of the situation that caused him to give up on love also causes him to engage in dissolute and self destructive behavior, which only goes to perpetuate his problems further. When he says “Stay Away, I’m not myself” that also suggests that he’s depressed and is acting out. He has “lost his way.”
