i think it's more about the kids that only know about a handful of famous as fuck bands like rancid and sex pistols. and think that makes them punk as. they concentrate more on image than anything else, and for them it's more about getting people to look at their 'crazy' hair then standing for something.
case in point. i know a kid who's just raided his dads records and is trying to go all punk, he only knows about the classics and bands we've told him about, he's just in it to attention seek, he buys brand new, expensive clothes. then tears them up so he can shove saftey pins in them. and when he first got liberty spikes he stood by the window in our college class just so kids would look at him.
