Hm, I think I'm off track here, but I think the camera bit is like... the media. Ealier in the song, it says
"Give the paper something to talk about.
Give the readers something to talk about."
Maybe he started all this(the killings) just to stir up the town? Maybe things in Saylor Lake were dull, so he thought he'd give them something to talk about.
At first, he was enjoying it. Then he started to grow tired of it ("I never thought that I would grow tired. Well, I did.") Maybe he was sick of the reaction he got from the people of Saylor Lake, I'm not sure. Maybe it just became an obsession, and he lost sight of why he started to kill ("but now I'm terribly mistaken for a fake")
