"Thinking back to innocence I can no longer connect" i see this as talking about that the relationship is now matured and that he can not connect back to the way things were when they were innocently in love.
"I don’t have a heart left to throw around" i agree with Kahlia that he has no heart to give to others, but i believe that it's not because he got hurt in that relationship, but becuase he doesn't want to be in any another relationships.
I also think the "red tail lights" are refering to the time, as in the time that he has missed and had passed him by.
