it seems this song deals with the annoyance of insecurity with the direction of a relationship, and how a person, because of this insecurity, can start to look to other relationships for justification of their confused actions, and they eventually forget why they're in the relationship at all because they're so focused on outside influences.
i have no idea what he means by "the look", some kind of action that instigates all of these confused feelings? he's probably talking about a personal instance in which it happened to him.
