I first heard this song when I was maybe 15 or 16, when I liked this music style a lot. Good Vermont band.
The song seems to work on 2 levels: The guy is working at a supermarket or some kind of store in a dead end job and he is therefore running around the store stocking, cleaning, etc. He is also running around, lost in life, directionless. The second part also seems a 2-leveler. It's stupid to literally "leave children unnattended in a shopping cart" because they might have a rally, which could be dangerous. Also, it's bad to be directionless in your life and to end up having the dead-end type jobs. Having society or your parents let you end up there is what the song also warns about.
