I know this is an old song, but...

Whether or not there is a literal event behind the song, it is obviously about the overwhelming nature of distance and direction.

When I listen, as corny as it is, I feel like I'm tumbling around in space, completely without a sense of bearing or horizon. That is what it feels like when one travels a great deal-- a complete loss of one's bearing, horizon and home.

The metaphor is how different the size of the earth is on a map. In a trice you can trace your journey, but the distance is enormous and humbling.
