Everyone's really intent on these songs being about the war/occupation in Iraq but I think that's not exactly right. More like inspired by the conflict without actually being about it.
Note the last line "and there never was"
It's about the general situation that someone who will never see the fighting can make the deciscion to send soldiers somewhere to die. Iraq comes to mind and Iraq probably inspired it because that's where westerners are fighting in this generation.
