i'm pretty sure it's sort of in homage to the great 'man in black,' johnny cash. bob dylan even said that it was his "walk the line," since he was heavily influenced by cash. he performed a lot with cash and did that song girl from the north country road.

johnny cash did a song "long black veil," which sounds a lot like this song. what's kind of strange is on the song "flushed from the bathroom of your heart," on the at the folsom prison album it says "i've been washed down the sink of your conscience" and then he makes a gulp sound like he drank it. in this song it says:

He said every man's conscience is vile and depraved, You cannot depend on it to be your guide When it's you who must keep it satisfied. It ain't easy to swallow, it sticks in the throat,

it's also interesting how it say the month of June and his wife is June. it reminds me a lot of how people were criticizing her relationship with Johnny because she was divorced and because he was still married. People were beating a dead horse, saying she was a sinner. but she didn't care. she loved him and so she went with him.
