This song, "Not I", is about a Christian who is either backslidden or afraid/embarassed to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, or live a life that shows that shows Him as such.
"Remember the day you lost that
Where is the shame that will bring your soul back?"
Because the line is specific in mentioning "bring your soul BACK", it shows that the person is already Christian but has backslidden.
"The solemn comfort of your grave"
It is extremely easy to live in sin, but very difficult to live for Christ, as Jesus states that we will be persecuted for his name's sake.
"If you close your eyes the light can’t take it away"
It is easy to stray from God. Something so simple and easy as closing your eyes can prevent your return to God, which is an incredible line by Demon Hunter. God will not forcedly pull you back towards Him, rather, He leaves the desicion totally up to you.
"The blind will follow on the path that you created in vain"
Whether you realize it or not, people observe the behaviour of other people and sometimes model there own life after the example given. The non-believers will follow the example of straying from God that you have exhibited.
"Not I - I won’t conform to what I see in you
Not I - I won’t surrender what I am
Not I - And even if it was a part of me
Not I - I’ll never be that way again"
Not I, I won't be that backslidden Christian to do all these things--straying from God, leading others away from God, fighting salvation...
"Reach back behind your pride
And pull the thorn from the burning pain in your side"
If you follow the world, you will be liked of the world, whereas the case would be vice versa if you followed Christ instead. If you are liked by many people in the world, then some form of pride will build up. The line also mentions "the BURNING pain in your side." Why would someone need to be told to remove a thorn if it caused you pain? I believe that the most miserable man is a man that has drifted away from God. The thorn represents the world, the Devil, how it has infected you. Yes, the thorn burns, but if you get rid of it and follow Jesus, people will ridicule you as according to His word. Many people are too weak or embarrassed to be bold for Christ and take the persecution of the world for His name.
"Sing me a new song
A broken song of redemption and regret
Sing me a new song
And beg for all the mercy you can get"
You must repent if you desire to go to Heaven. The "Broken Song" is the repentance, expressing your regret for what you have done and asking for redemption.
"Beg for all the mercy you can get"
This line is a very harsh line, saying to "beg for all the mercy you can get." It makes it sound as though there is the chance that you won't receive forgiveness, as you must "beg" for it. It can then be inferred that the person is already in Hell or already dead, in which case they would beg and beg but receive no forgiveness, for their period of grace has passed.
That's what this song is to me.
And yes, I'm 15, so people out there who think that young naiive teenagers cannot think so deeply, think again :)
Yeeeeaa maaaan :3, I know what you mean. What you said, makes perfect sense. it's pretty much the new meaning to the song, but otherwise, what's your take on the first verse?

Pretty much, my thoughts on this song is my interpretation of it:

"So now you’re suffering the fallacy of what you said"
"So now you’re suffering the fallacy of what you said"
Personally, I think it's the outcome of the situation first, so the first line, "so now you're suffering the fallacy of what you said" it's as if it's judgment day with god and the back slidder, kinda get what i mean?

"When...
"When you uncover the depression from where you’ve tread
Breathe over the glass you wrote on
Swallow all that you waste your throat on"
Keeping the idea that it's the outcome of the situation first (judgment day), that line makes me think of a talk with god, god's telling him, when you find out what you did, (The next line i'm a litte hazy, so bare with me) look deeply into what you said, and did. Glass, it gives out a reflection, like a character sketch in elementary school, or a brain storm in high school, you draw the character, and you give superficial, and internal characteristics of the person, or subject. Same thing with this, look into the glass, see your reflection, look at how you changed, as darkcelldx said, sin is easy to dwell in; it has enough power to manipulate yourself. And so, "swallow all that you waste your throat on" pretty much to me means, eat your own words and actions.
"You wear the mark and wave the banner they made with sin
Revealing every single lie that you’ve been breeding within"
To me, that means, you worked together with sin, and your proud of it; everyone can see your with sin. Sin then reveals everything you've done. Every wrong, every disappointment, everything.
"Wash over the skin you’ve broken
Think over the tone you spoke in"
STILL Keeping in mind, judgment day, the first line first: "Wash over the skin you've broken". Backsliders, once christians, but then turned to sin. "Wash over the skin", wash your skin of sin, come back to me, cleanse you physical self. "Think over the tone you spoke in" meaning look at what you said, as a sinner. Think about it, and hear the tone you said it in... yyeeeaa.. that's kinda self explanitory... but that one line, kinda gives us the message of the last part of the this verse, to ponder, and act.
iunno, it's just my idea of the song. you guys contribute, what do you think this whole song means? :D i'm gonna go sleep... ... but eat first :) god bless :D
I absolutely LOVE demon hunter's harmonization :D just had to say that :)
