Scientifically, this is about an asteroid or meteors causing the end of the world or a severe blow to life and humanity on Earth. Metaphorically, the sun turning black and the reaper's shadow signify doom, death and destruction. On a whole other level, the old ones could be Lovecraftian Gods waiting to re-take the earth after this event. After the meteor shower and destruction, the state of the earth returned to what it was in the pre-Christian era, as this religion and its followers were either destroyed or lost their hope/faith as anarchy reigned and civilization returned to primitive times, causing the rise of pagan or "old ones' " religion/faith.
It would be interesting to know what is hiding and waiting among the stars: old Gods, the meteors, or both? Or, could it be that the whole meteoric pass is a metaphor for what these Gods are going to do to the earth? Truly frightening.
