I don't think it has to do with being ridiculed for one's ideas, because
these lines:
"Don’t tell your gods you no longer believe
Because as soon as you say it out loud they will leave you"
I find the lines to be true. I'm an atheist, and I've been one for about 5 going on 6 years. And it wasn't until about three years ago when in an off-hand remark gave it as a reason to my friend for not going to church that I actually believed it and felt it.
