I think it's more about disillusionment with reality. Television here can be seen to provide hollow, unrealistic role models for life. She's cold lookin' for that hero, something which TV can provide, but ultimately which is false. She rejects any man (who gets dissed like a roach) because he can not live up to any expectations which the TV creates, and that's what makes him mad.
I agree with scarecrow in that context is important, Generation X was seen as the MTV generation. This song shows the harmful effects of what Baudrillard would describe as hyperreality, what could also be said as "the myth being larger than any man".
