This song makes me wonder if Debbie Harry has some experience of Catholicism. Many of the images refer to the Sacrament of the Eucharist commonly known as Communion. She quotes Jesus' words, "This is my body, this is my blood" from the Last Supper in a way that reflects the Catholic Mass. The true brilliance of the song, however, is connecting the rituals of the Mass to the Communion of two people in love. (Preferably married, but Debbie doesn't go that way). The Communion of the Mass is a gift of Christ to us, and a challenge from Christ to give ourselves to him and each other. Debbie gives herself, body and blood, to the one she loves just as God divinely planned.
