I think the line " Well I tried to fake it, I don't mind sayin', I just can't make it" is him admitting to the fact that he knows he just can't tie himself down even if he loves her.
Reminds me of the situation I'm in right now. The guy I really like was REALLY hurt in the past and can't bring himself to start another relationship and even admits that he should try with me but is afraid to. He's incredible, so i'll stick it out...
