Cheryl, I'm curious -- what did he say in concert regarding the choice not to have kids? I'd love to know -- as I, too, have made the decision to never have children (and I'm a straight woman in a 10-year-long relationship). I'm a long-time Moz fan and love just about all of his work, but this is one of the songs that I connect to in a more direct and literal way. I think he touches on the fact that--even if a person is not literally the end of his or her family line--the choice to not have children goes against the grain of family and society and yet can have great value and very sound reasoning behind it.
