I've always believed that this song tells the story of a man whose partner is considering an abortion. He is against the idea, but his partner is determined to go through with it.
He was initially overjoyed by the news of the pregnancy, but his joy is short-lived:
"There's a lost man, with a bitter soul,
Only for a moment did life make him whole
And while he was, he thought he was invincible"
By turns, he reflects on human existence:
"We are all made, as an afterthought,
Destined to believe that we are what we are not;"
and loss of youth and innocence:
"We both know that staying young, can take its toll..."
This lyric directly addresses the unborn child:
"You don't mean a thing, but you exist in their minds
How does it feel, when they have turned out the lights?
'Cause you know they sooner would get rid of you, than fight"
