The band saw the film ten times in June 1976 while stuck in Cleveland, Ohio after a rained-out show was cancelled. The "freaks" in the film chant "Gooble gobble, we accept her, one of us, one of us." The Ramones mutated this into "Gabba Gabba Hey." The "D-U-M-B" line was a joke on what critics were calling the band.
