Hmm, it may really just be nonsense, but I love finding a hidden meaning behind it. I compare it to Life on Mars by David Bowie and that's a massive compliment coming from me ^_^
Yeah, I think it's about going insane and giving into your dark side, but also trying to push against it and at the same push against the boundaries of knowledge and not just accept it (like when he goes on about "It's never too late
to take the chance of a lifetime under the weight
of life, and chance, and death.
And it's never too far out.
We don't know how the sun became a star.
They say it's always been that way,
but I'll be damned if that case." and "we can talk about the government conspiracies
and circumvent the challenges that represent our foes.").
I also can see other parts going on about insanity and dark side ... there must be someone/something pushing their evil side into the open - because they're saying the evil shadow has a cup of tea and someone is inviting this person round telling them they'll put the kettle on.
Also, "we can talk about the faceless evil shadow creatures
underneath our clothes" is sort of like saying that they hide their true selves underneath layers of fake smiles and politeness (just like you hide your naked body underneath layers of synthetic material) ...
