I relate this song to my own family. There's never been any abuse (not that I'm aware of, anyway), but on my dad's side, there's always been petty bickering and pointless feuds. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners are like walking on eggshells. No one's thrown a punch, but shouting matches and even the occasional thrown object is not unheard of. There's a cycle of parents pissing off their children to the point where they want nothing to do with each other that goes back generations.

My sister and I long ago made a pact break this cycle, but my greatest fear is this will happen with me and my own (future) children. I think that's what this song is about, facing those fears and making a choice. We're all "called by the sound of history repeating," and you can either break the cycle ("golden wings") or be condemned to repeat it ("leaden shoes")

BTW, from what I've read, Matt and Evan were very close to their father, so I think this might be about their grandfather.

Oh, and neither Matt nor Evan were adopted! Just look at the pictures of them and their mother! It's pretty obvious.
