to me this song is about a person who is near death and is talking or writing or thinking about a close friend. obviously ryan is writing from the perspective of the person about to die and is wondering about his friend's willingness to be around at the funeral. the whole thing with stained glass doors, being carried down an aisle with tears and lowered down under skies of grey all obviously have to do with the person being carried through a church and then buried.
also:
there is one very interesting line in this song
"All the blood is rushing out
I'm better off without"
may be a reference to Heaven whereas there will be no blood in Heaven in the resurrected and glorified bodies due to Christ's shed blood is sufficient enough for all humanity.
