I disagree, I think it's a soul that he can feel sometimes but whoever it is never addresses him directly, almost teasing him, dangling the greatest love he could ever have right in front of his eyes. That's why she's sneaking through his corridor, floating, lurking, wandering... he loves her, but she's not talking "face to face" and giving herself to him... it's just out of reach. It just hasn't surfaced in the physical world... yet.
