The speaker contrasts his own 'self-endearment' with the things he mentions, like achievement, having a significant other, and love. Then the song switches into a more dream-like tone with more intensity from the bells/chimes. At the end the speaker starts talking about 'death' which 'comes to all of us alive,' leading me to believe that the speaker loses a significant other and this event makes him realize his own mortality. I think the speaker is going through the process of becoming aware of the process of dying after he loses someone close to him and the person he loses would otherwise be there to console him and tell him that it's okay because "death comes to all of us alive".
