Kings Cross obviously means a lot to Paul Kelly and probably was a 'holiday' destination when he was younger. All of the song is about his love for the place except the part about 'fair-weather friends' who are only your friend when things are going good. When things arent working for you, they couldnt care less and i dont really understand the next 2 lines. Fair enough that thier the hungriest, because they feed off you while everythings working and i guess that he keeps his mouth shut and doesnt tell them. i.e. he tolerated their 'fair-weathered' relationship but i dont know whats with 'i cross their open hands' maybe its re-assurance or marking them for something... or denying them something.. not sure. Someone comment the meaning of that bit for me plz.
