A nice split view on life in a depressive state, probably talking to someone else he cares about and being depressed because they seem to be settling for something that just isn't fair to him or her....lifestyle? Another man or lover?
In any case, she seems to admire him for what he feels and believes or him putting up his wonder and fears in comparison probably wouldn't mean much. I mean, I'd like to think the obvious - that it's really progressive and kinda "get back on your feet" type of song based on the third verse. But the music is so morose and somber and he seems to convince me of his pessimism in the first part of the song so well, I'm actually skeptical. In any case, I've used both "reasons for living" lines several times, especially the first one: "Reasons for living never come cheap, but even your best ones can put me to sleep". Meh, I'm just bouncing ideas off here, I don't really know. The song has always meant a lot to me either way.
