ive listened to this song for 5 months and never understood it until today.....
its about being who you are with the people who love and shaped you as a person, but constantly dreaming about the places you want to go. i know that as someone who constantly moves you look at life as always getting to that PLACE. everything you do is to get to where you think you want to go, and things will be perfect once you're there. i think the part about the dog sniffing and whimpering for someone to know is just because you focus so much on getting away from where you are, you dont see the value of the PEOPLE who are around you. and then you get there and you see that its not what you wanted it to be like, you just fucked up your everyday flow of life for what? and you dont know anybody that you love because you left them all where you came from. and youre just left with this sinking feeling of knowing that you left all the people you wanted to know for the places that you wanted to go. whats the place without the people?
I enjoy your meaning the best because it coincides with how I see it closely. To let you know a bit more about what I envisioned, I was smoking, and I tend to find deeper meanings in songs when I do. Ha... Anyway, I was listening and I felt we spend our whole lives trying to be like the people we look up to, fill ourselves with the places we want to go, that we literally become the people we wanted to know, or we find out that all our lives we were looking for someone and we missed knowing...

And, in essence, we're the places that we wanted to go. Like I'm "Alaska" because I want to go live tere someday, which, now that I'm thinking about it, would help make the video for this song a bit more relevant, since the girl's boyfriend is a tree, and she finds him in a forest with a treehouse... Perhaps his place he wanted to go? Possible.
A final note, when I was listening to:
"I hardly have places that I need to go
Because you're the places that I wanted to go
Yeah, you're the places that we wanted to go
Yeah, you're the places that we wanted to go"
I felt like he was talking to us, his fans. How many times I wished I'd have had friends that listened to this music and "got" it and grew up with me. MM wishes that they could know all of us. Even rock stars get lonely for some "true" friends I'm sure...
