I agree with colum1225's interpretation: he was scared for a long time to grow old and settle down and live a quiet life, but as he said in the song, he got older anyway. And now he realizes that he shouldn't have been afraid, and that a quiet, boring, traditional life wouldn't be so bad if he were living it with her.
