I think this song is about the speaker confusing what they want with what is. For example: The speaker wants a friendship that she thinks she has yet the person who is "virtually" the speaker's friend does not want anything to do with the speaker so he/she justs ignores the speaker - yet the speaker still believes that she is his/her friend. (this can be with friends, lovers, family, ect.)
