I think that this song tells the story of a band that makes it big in six months, however, instead of taking the whole band they want only one member. The band doesn't understand why he would do this, a common issue that happens to bands pointed out by the "What they don't understand..." lines. They don't get that this is the only other way for him to advance in life instead of being a loser. A lot of people probably think, jee, that's pretty shitty giving up your band, but how would you feel if you were in the middle of Bumfuck, Nowhere and you got offered a huge deal? That's right you'd probably take, and in the end it's the best decision for you even if nobody else can understand.
