My interpretation of the song is that someone close to the singer is killed hence he is a lonely boy. He realises that they were going to lose each other eventually - just a matter of time. They will all die soon - still getting older every day. the bit about the siren might be about how when he hears a siren he is reminded of his friend's death - I've already lost him once. The part about severing the plates refers to the earth's crust. If he divided the 7 plates into more, the sea would open up and reveal 7 again. This is about how he can't change nature or the way things are and he can't bring his friend back.
Of course this might not be what the song is about, but it works for me.
