Personally i think this song is about a guy and a girl who were maybe good friends before and decided to go out or whatever.. and maybe either she was abused by previous boyfriends or he was abused as a child or maybe even abused a past girlfriend("im no better than the ones before me") and she is determined to help him not to be that type of person ("what made you think you'd have it your way".."don't say i didn't warn you that i'll always stay the same") and he really wants to change too but he had a breakdown and ended up abusing her too ("I'm in the middle of a breakdown, watching you scream") and he knows he let her down and hates that he did that to her ("In the winding down hours.. i let your heart down again") and he tried to change and be better but in the end he gave up because he thinks he can't ("it's time we both knew, can't stop what i started.. this time we both lose".. which i geuss makes the song more literal than everyone thinks.
