To me there are two meanings of this song. The love one and the sex one. The love one makes more sense to me;

He's seen the love that she's show him, but he cannot create it in return. Though he was able to in the past (comes from the I recognize).

Lets watch the night take its form etc.

"Wait for a heart that never lies, but not this time."
She's waiting for someone to be truthful to her, but he isn't what she is looking for.
"Watch those explosions in the sky and you'll go blind, but not this time."
Explosions in the sky, to me it means fireworks, as in the firework relationg to love. So there may be those but if they simbolized real love then she would go blind. But they aren't, so the "but not this time" comes into it.
"Will you live in hope or dark desire?
What can I say?

Will you live in hope to find someone to love or someone to lust? He doesn't want love, he wants passion.
