basically what i hear from this is a man who loved a woman who, from fear of committment, never admitted her love for him. She went missing, explaining the late night calls the man makes to strangers asking "have you seen this girl" and her neighbors' assumptions that she had moved away. While she was murdered from by her captor, her biggest regret ("I've done something so terrible") was never letting this man know how she truly felt, and leaving him alone without the knowledge of her love. The true tragedy, though, is that the man returns home, having given up on his search for the woman, convinced that she had left because she didn't love him the way he loved her. He did not and may never know that she did indeed love him.
P.S. The line "I'm over you now" in the woman's part suggests strongly that ay one point, she did have feelings for him.
"i dont mean to be a bother, but have you seen this girl? wooooooooooooow i was just about to make myself look like a complete jackass and start sayin how "have you seen this girl" meant how she was so pretty so he was saying he cant help himself, but then i finished reading your post and read the lyrics again and realized youre right. good job :)

PS i think youre right about the asking the neighbors about her part, but i dont think she was killed. i think they both loved eachother a lot and it really scared her and she knew he was gunnu propose so she moved without telling him cause she couldnt bear to say goodbye

no i agree with you that she was killed "keeping an eye on the world from so many thousands of feet off the ground" "im at home in the clouds towering over your head"

I also agree with the idea she was killed, it seems very likely with the wording, I also think
Waking the neighbors, unfamiliar faces
He pleads though he tries
But he's only denied
Now he's dying to get inside
Suggests it may have been a stalker, like He pleads for her to give him a chance, and when he's dinied he's even more determined. Some stalkers even kill the item of obsession, which also would fit with this scenario.

I agree with you except for the 'I'm over you now' bit. She says that while she's talking about being at home in the clouds, etc, and I can't help but wonder if it means over as in above him? Anyway, that's what I got from it.

Apologies for the revival of the dead thread, but, I disagree with YourZeldaness, I think from the song, she reciprocated, but was scared of commitment, so she never showed it.

Years probably past, with her always on his mind, at which point he returned, but it was too late, whether it be due to death or the girl moving away.

I just think that the "i'm over you now" is basically her saying that being on a plane leaving town (up in the sky) is the only way she's going to be literally/metaphorically "over him", and she wants to, she feels like home in the clouds, without commitment and/or responsibilities, she's like.. free to go and do whatever she wants.

Alrite so I partially agree but I think the guy is obviously in love with the girl. She committed suicide so she's saying forgive me ive done something terrible I'm terrified to speak and stuff. And she's now watching over him in heaven aka the clouds. It doesn't really hit the guy that the girls dead until the end of the song. (that's why he's asking the neighbors where she's at)

i do think she died, but he is in denial. i think the reason the song is called remembering "sunday" is maybe because he went to a memorial mass on sunday or something? but still cant accept that she is dead, and is asking the neighbors where she is? idk

i agree with her either leaving on a plane or dying
but i think "she lead him upstairs she led him upstairs left him dying to get in" has to do with sex and then she dropped him cause she was scared about commitment...

I don't really understand why everyone thinks the girl dies in the song, even in an interview Alex said that the girl doesn't die, she just didn't share the same feelings, and the line, "I'm at home in the clouds/towering over your head" Alex said the girl is on a plane. Also because he said that the girl in this song is the same girl as in Vegas, I can see a relation between the line about the girl being at home in the clouds and Alex being at home on the interstate in vegas.

Hhm. I agree. I think she could have been killed. Good Job (: I love the way you explained the lyrics. You make a very good point.
