The dark side of the moon is dark, of course, because it isn't facing the sun, so the way it is lit is when sunlight reflects off the clouds of the earth and, like a big cosmic mirror, bathes the dark side of the moon. The earth is therefore illuminated "first hand" by the sun. The moon is illuminated "second hand" by the earth. The lyricist is then illuminated "third hand" by the moon.
