This is perhaps the most beautiful song I have ever heard. It makes me cry almost every time I listen to it. I know that Red is a Christian band and all, but I prefer to not think about this as a Christian song. I completely see how it is refering to God, but I think it becomes an even more powerful song if it is viewed non-religiously, but that is just my opinion.
I would argue that it could be interpreted as being about someone who is completely lost after being separated from their love, perhaps they broke up and the person tried to move on but couldn't, to the point in which they do not think they can go on without them. They have forgotten who they are in the process. When they are reunited or get back together after being apart, the person finds everything that they thought they lost. The person ends up coming back to their love as pieces of who they used to be, but they know that their love can make them whole again.
Of course, that isn't what they originally wrote it as, but I like to think so.
As an atheist, I would also argue that you don't need God to be whole, but you do need love and hope in your life.
I relate this to Christ. A woman cannot save you or complete you. She is flesh and blood, just like me and you. Us humans are selfish, greedy, prideful, nasty people full of pervertive motives so when you place another human being up on that pedistule to complete or fill that void that you feel you need, you are setting up for failure. But when two people(man and woman) are both after something that holds true, full of love, compassion, comfort, wisdom, strength, and who is absolutely perfect who was not capable of sin in Christ you will find something...

Idolatry is dangerous, and God(Our Creator) didn't create us to idolize another human or put them in that position to complete our life. It wouldn't be fair to us humans to do that.
Str8706, if that's how you think of your significant other, you evidently don't believe in love at all - only in your religion - and I pity you. A man or woman can make the one who truly loves them whole with not even the touch of a hand - without a doubt. Also, if you think all people are the list of things that you typed out, you can't think much of yourself at all either and - going by the Bible - God made man in His own image. If that's the case, then His...

I don't think it's wrong to believe in Christianity, just I don't, and I have a higher view of people - and especially love - than I do religion.
I agree completely with fallacyofdualism - it could very well be interpreted as a love song in this sense without any trouble whatsoever. The mark of a truly great song is to be liked by many people across many genres of music, and to be able to be viewed from more than a single perspective.
Icerider, if you want to completely quote the bible, man was created in God's image until man commited the ultimate sin and was set apart from God. So yea, in the beginning man was created exactly in his image, but bc man was tricked into sinning...he could no longer walk with God.

This song is obviously written about the singers relationship with God and how he makes him whole after the world breaks him to pieces. I say obviously, bc that's what the writer of the song intended it to mean.

Now, bc songs are considered art, you can interpret it how you please :)
I respect your input, but just a thought, if there is no GOD,then what would we know what love amd hope is. Where does it come from we have feeling like love and hope built in is mot by accident,I am a christain and an apologist.( defending the faith) everything that has a begining has a cause,if we have no caise amd no meaning then why long for hope and love?

I agree! I don't like to see it in a religious way! You gave the right interpretation!

I was thinking that same exact thing. Wow.

STR8706 is definitely correct. Icerider, no person will ever really know what love is until they've experienced the love of God.
