I think this song is not about sending someone away but about willingly let them go.
I also know and love only the version which Lisa Hannigan sings at the Union Chapel, and I never thought she's hurt by someone who doesn't love her as much. Sometimes it's just the way it is - you love someone so badly it's almost impossible for them to love you as much. I think she is hurt because she feels he WANTS her to let him go. She's not upset about him not loving her, I think she's upset about having to let him go. And she loves him so much, she is willing to do that. She cares more about his happiness then hers. She would have died for him, she crossed the line, but the one thing she needs to do is let him go.
