i might be completely wrong or going out on a limb here, but i think this song is about suicide prevention. all throughout the video, savage garden is emphasizing communication and its importance. this could be someone with thoughts of suicide reaching out to someone, talking to someone, and getting help. this song mentions being alone, darkness, pain, and heartache, which are all things suicidal people experience and feel. in the song it mentions finding a friend and finding relief which can be achieved through counseling and help. this may be about one friend reaching out to someone with thoughts of suicide, letting them know that they are there for them and are ready to catch them if they fall. this song really means a lot and is very powerful because one friend willing to help + communication can really save a life. the song lets people with these thoughts know that they are not alone which is a big deal because it shows these people that there are others out there who care about them.
