I think you make a lot of good points cromag41. I believe Dave's saying that there are a lot of self righteous people with narrow minds. When he says "God has many names, but the devil has many more" I think he's saying there are many faces of evil, it comes in many forms. But, with the loving and moral upbringing he was given, he's able to avoid a lot of the evil pitfalls in life, and keep an open mind. I believe Dave is saying "God has many names" meaning there are many names for God. There are many ideas of who or what it is, and who are we to say or decide what is the absolute definition? As for the third verse, I think he's just trying to bring us down to our basic elements. That we are really just biology, just a collection of cells. There are many creatures who have survived thousands of years by virtue of basic instincts, who are we to believe we are the greatest? As for "Hello God I'm avoiding the truth" I wish I knew. Maybe it's just a general reference to the argument between creation and evolution. I look forward to hearing more ideas. I really love the messages in this song.
