I think that this song really starts out with him saying how he sees a girl he likes and they are not together. He writes down his feelings in letters and messages, but he never sends them to her so she doesn't know what he feels. He keeps little peices of paper with his love written on it but never gets up the nerve to tell her and so he treats his love for her almost as if it were dead (epigrams are short poems often used on tombstones). He tries to see if any of his love has "eroded" or worn away from being left alone for so long. Then it reminds him of how much he likes her and re-sparks his love for her and he imagines what it would be like to be with her and can't live much longer without that image becoming real.
