I previously said: "I think saying he'd sooner surrender means he'd rather give up and not be there when the final piece of them falls. He feels it's inevitable and doesn't want to see that finality." But now I that I hear the song more, it can also be the totaly opposite. He could be saying he'd rather surrender to his feeling and try again with her before it's completely over and that last piece of them fades away.
