FujiFlame's analysis seems compelling, but I would like to add a different perspective:
IMO Vegetarians are psy.trance consumers.
Converting vegetarians is the attempt to convert Infected Mushroom traditional audience to a more mainstream appealing music type, manifested itself in the second CD, which is experimental in nature, contains lyrics, more downbeat, and is far from what IM were famous for – high beat psy.trance.
Minding the gap since 1996 – being there, minding, the “gap” between the mainstream music culture and the psy.trance evolutionary path.
Never again will I sell out – will they be able to repeat their success formulae?
Cooking the next step – preparing their entrance into their new and different type of music production, which is slightly distanced from their traditional psy.trance.
It is a well known fact that trance parties where this type of music is playing, and coming from Israel I was fortuned to attend more than one - more often than not exhibit some soft of a nature theme, and people are tripping their brains off on whatever they can find. This obviously includes the famous hallucination mushrooms - the so called Infected Mushrooms. Mushrooms, and thus naturists, and hence – vegetarians are a common theme for psy.trance culture.
I’ve been following Infected since 1996, and Converting vegetarians is the first album where a more mainstream melodic beats and themes found itself into their songs. Who would believe- they even have lyrics!
I remember an article read back in 2000, how IM are the best Psy.Trance band in the world, yet that just seems not to be enough for making a real monetary breakthrough. They just have to appeal to more mainstream music tastes. And I remember reading the duo talking about their aspirations on the topic.
IMO – converting vegetarians marks the time of their revolution.
